In Memory - Bette Hughes

Mary Elizabeth “Bette” Hughes, of Falcons Landing, Potomac Falls, Virginia, beloved military wife and devoted mother of four and grandmother of eight, entered peacefully into rest on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at home with her family by her side. She was 90 years old.

Daughter of the late Frank W. and Marie E. Masterson, she was born August 19th, 1922 in Balmville, NY.

Bette was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy in Newburgh, NY and Spencer Business School. She was a member of the American Red Cross, Enlisted Wives Club, Non-Commissioned Officers Wives Club, and Officers Wives Club at various Air Force bases.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, LTG (Ret), James D. Hughes, whom she married on June 4, 1946 in West Point, NY; her children, Donna Fallander and her husband Robert of Colorado Springs, CO, Michael Hughes and his wife Cheryl of Asheville, NC, Karen Marchant and her husband Richard of Springfield, VA, and Robert Hughes and his wife Gina of Alexandria, VA; her brother, Robert Masterson of San Jose, CA; grandchildren, Heather Hughes, Amanda Hughes, Holly Hughes, Ashley Hughes, Bryan Marchant, Brittany Marchant, Allison Hughes, and Lizzie Hughes. She was predeceased by her brother, Frank H. Masterson.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm on Tuesday, October 23rd at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh, NY. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, October 24th in Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh, NY. Burial will follow in the United States Military Academy Cemetery, West Point, NY.
