Under the agreement, the National Archives takes control of its 12th Presidential library. The Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace Foundation, which has operated the Library since it opened in 1990, retains control of much of the 13-acre Library site, including the Birthplace and memorial sites, the gardens, and most of the Katherine B. Loker Center, including the White House East Room. The National Archives will be responsible for the archives, exhibits, and Library programs, in consultation and partnership with the Nixon Foundation.
Under the agreement, the Foundation deeded to the government a massive cache of political documents and recordings which the courts had required the National Archives to return to President Nixon and his successors. A decade ago the Nixon Foundation pledged to preserve the records for history. They are now open to researchers in the Library’s new reading room.ional Archives takes control of its 12th Presidential library.
