Nixon Library Announces Gingerbread House Competition Showcasing Local Bakeries
In 1969, First Lady Pat Nixon established the treasured holiday tradition of displaying a gingerbread house in the White House. The original house, created by Assistant Executive Chef Hans Raffert, was a traditional German A-frame style house that weighed 40 pounds. This holiday season, the Nixon Foundation is celebrating the Nixons’ White House legacy with its special programming.
Starting November 28, a gingerbread house competition will feature submissions from four local bakeries. During regular visiting hours, guests to the Nixon Library are invited to submit a vote for their favorite.
The gingerbread houses will be on display during regular visiting hours and during two family-friendly holiday events:
- November 28 from 5:30 to 8:30 PM, Gingerbread Spice and Everything Nice
- December 20, from 5:30 to 8:30 PM, A Candlelight Evening at the Nixon Library
