Remembering Josie Abplanalp
The Richard Nixon Foundation is deeply saddened by the passing of Josephine “Josie” Abplanalp. Mrs. Abplanalp and her husband, Bob, were steadfast and devoted friends of the Nixon family for many decades.
Over the course of her long life, Mrs. Abplanalp was active in support of numerous charitable endeavors, especially in her community of Bronxville, New York and the Catholic Church. Along with her husband, in 1971 she was inducted into two ancient Catholic charitable orders, the Order of Malta and the Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
In 2011, Mrs. Abplanalp donated to the Richard Nixon Foundation the property immediately adjacent to the Nixon Library. The Library’s upcoming state-of-the-art special exhibits gallery will rise on this land, a tribute to Mrs. Abplanalp’s vision and her commitment to advancing President Nixon’s legacy.
The close friendship of the Nixons and Abplanalps endured until President Nixon’s passing. Just two days before the stroke that would end his life, President Nixon joined the Abplanalp family in celebrating the wedding of their daughter, Marie.
Mrs. Abplanalp is survived by her son, John, and his wife, Tonina, her daughter, Marie, and her husband, Greg Holcombe, and four grandchildren.
