Fifty-two years ago this month, President Nixon signed the landmark equality legislation known as Title IX to ensure equal opportunities for girls and women to participate and excel in high school and college sports.

This past Saturday, over 600 runners of all ages participated in the 3rd annual Nixon 5K for Title IX to commemorate the anniversary. The event kicked off with opening remarks from Congresswoman Young Kim and Mayor of Yorba Linda Tara Campbell, a flag salute by the Yorba Linda Girl Scout Honor Guard and the National Anthem performed by Madeline Smith, Miss Placentia 2024. Special thanks to this year’s title sponsor, UCI Health.

Team Members from the local youth soccer team Fullerton Rangers FC led the run and cadets from the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy completed the course in cadence. The 5K course followed Yorba Linda’s El Cajon Trail with the starting and finishing line in front of the Nixon Library. During the event, a vendor fair with over thirty booths promoted local businesses, many of which promote health and fitness.

Mark your calendars for next year’s Nixon 5K for Title IX: June 21, 2025!
