Hundreds gathered in the East Room of the Nixon Library for the annual commemoration of remembrance for victims of September 11, 2001. Held every year since the terrorist attack, this ceremony brings together members of the community from Orange County and beyond to honor the victims, show appreciation for first responders and evoke a spirit of unity and patriotism.
This year’s ceremony included remarks from Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy, Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes, and Retired NYPD Officer Marc Manfro, a first responder in New York City on 9/11 who has been honored with over sixty awards for his service. All three speakers shared stories of heroism from that infamous day and how their sacrifices continue to impact the lives of Americans. This year, it was noted how the children of many first responders from 9/11 are now first responders themselves– carrying on the mantle of their parents and embodying a call to service to a cause bigger than themselves.
With the Airport fire currently burning in Orange and Riverside Counties, the audience gave a standing ovation in support of firefighters and other first responders currently serving in harm’s way.
The program also featured special musical performances by the Orange County Fire Authority Pipes and Drums, Villa Park High School Band, Orange High School Chamber Singers and the OC Master Chorale.
