Blood Drives at the Nixon Library remain a source of much needed positive news in what has become one of the most challenging times our nation has ever faced.
Beginning in March, the Richard Nixon Foundation opened the doors of the beautiful East Room West to the American Red Cross and Lifestream Blood Bank, hosting nine blood drives with more on the calendar. Each drive has reached its donor capacity, evidence of the continued will of Americans to help one another.
The nine drives held in March, April, May, and June have resulted in over 550 usable units of blood. According to the health heroes at the American Red Cross, each usable unit can save up to three lives, meaning that over 1650 lives have potentially been saved by blood donated at the Nixon Library.
These blood drives are helping to fill a deficit created by widespread cancellations of regularly scheduled donation events at schools, street fairs, and office complexes. The Nixon Library is one of the very few venues that has adequate spacing and sanitation protocols that allow the drives to take place.
“The location, check-in area, room set up meet all the requirements for hosting a blood drive during these unusual times and donors love the location!” said Valerie Allaeddini, an official from the American Red Cross, who noted that drives at the Nixon Library have played a key part in maintaining an adequate blood supply in our local community during this trying time.
Recently, both the American Red Cross and LifeStream Blood Bank have begun testing all donors for Covid-19 antibodies. By providing this critical testing, which reveals if the donor has had a strain of the virus and processes its antibodies, the blood drives provide another valuable resource to the medical community. Those donors who do possess the antibodies can choose to donate further to help people battling the disease
The Nixon Library is committed to helping in the fight against Covid-19 and is proud to provide this valuable resource in that fight. Please consider registering for one of the upcoming blood drives listed here.
If you cannot donate blood but would like to support these efforts, please consider making a one-time contribution today to support our efforts and ensure that we can continue to host these lifesaving blood drives.
