Last night David and Julie Eisenhower went on Stephen Colbert’s show to talk about their new book Going Home To Glory: A Memoir Of Life With Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961-1969. Their conversation can be seen here. As is usually the case with Colbert’s talks with authors, little attention was devoted to the book itself, though a famous photograph of the Eisenhowers in their younger years was discussed at length, which moved Colbert to identify himself as a “Warrenhead” – as in Chief Justice Earl Warren. The host promised that the famed “Colbert bump” would have its effect, and indeed, the book is now climbing Amazon.com’s bestseller list steadily.
For a couple of more extensive and detailed talks by the Eisenhowers about their book, here is their appearance yesterday on Leonard Lopate’s WNYC radio program, and also their presentation at the Nixon Library last month. David and Julie also have been interviewed by Art Carey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, and David by himself answered a series of questions about the book from Scott Butki of blogcritics.org. This week the Eisenhowers are finishing their current round of appearances to promote the book. Tomorrow (Thursday) they will talk with historian Michael Beschloss at the William G. McGowan Theater in the National Archives in Washington, and on Friday they will speak at the Easttown Library outside Philadelphia.
Here, I should mention that I’m halfway through Going Home To Glory and that it’s proven to be an enormously informative and often entertaining book, which I highly recommend. I will write more about it after I finish it.
