During his first State of the Union address, delivered in 1970, President Nixon designated the environment as the defining issue of the new decade. “The great question of the Seventies is…shall we make our peace with nature and begin to make reparations for the damage we have done to our air, to our land, and to our water,” he declared. In a divided political climate, Nixon went on to achieve bipartisan support to become the creator of modern environmental policy and created the Environmental Protection Agency.
Five decades later, the environment remains a key issue in America.
Benji Backer is the Executive Chairman and Founder of the American Conservation Coalition (ACC), the largest right-of-center environmental organization in the country, and the author of The Conservative Environmentalist: Common Sense Solutions for a Sustainable Future.
In The Conservative Environmentalist, Backer delivers an entirely new strategy to take care of the planet while putting the economic interest of the American people first. Drawing on cutting-edge science, a deep understanding of local community needs, and his experience rallying politicians on both sides of the aisle to take action, Backer offers hope for everyone who cares about the state of the great outdoors.
