Former U.S. National Security Advisor, U.S. Army, ret., Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and Stanford University and bestselling author H.R. McMaster visits the Nixon Library to talk about his time in the White House as written in his new book, At War with Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House.
H.R. McMaster served as a U.S. Army officer for 34 years. He was an armored cavalry commander in the Persian Gulf War, where he commanded one of the last great tank battles in any theater of war. He would later serve in both the Afghanistan War and the Iraq War and retired as a Lieutenant General in 2018. He is, additionally, the author of Dereliction of Duty (published 1997), a seminal and widely-studied work on the Vietnam War, as well as Battlegrounds (published 2020).
General McMaster was appointed the 25th National Security Advisor to the President of the United States, a position he held from 2017 to 2018. During his West Wing tenure, he championed a major overhaul of America’s National Security Strategy to more pointedly counter rising threats from abroad.
Lt. General McMaster will appear in-conversation at the Nixon Library with Dr. Luke Nichter, who holds the James H. Cavanaugh Endowed Chair in Presidential Studies at Chapman University and is Director of the Presidential Studies Program.
